In Season 3, her wardrobe evolves as she steps into the courtroom as a newly minted defense attorney. When Lorna embraces the power suit while retaining her unique flair, her fashion choices stand out amid the conventional attire typically seen in legal settings, showcasing her originality and confidence.
Character Overview
Lorna is an indispensable member of Mickey Haller’s legal team and brings a personal touch to the office environment. As she transitions into her role as a defense attorney in Season 3, Lorna’s wardrobe shifts to incorporate more professional attire, notably power suits with a modern twist. Inspired by both 1990s women’s suits and contemporary workwear, her outfits feature sharp shoulders and crisp collars, embodying the essence of the traditional power suit. However, she infuses these pieces with her style, opting for vibrant colors, unique patterns, and unexpected details that make her stand out.
Lorna’s ability to take fashion risks increases as her professional and personal life becomes more stable, showcasing her growth and confidence. For instance, on her first official day as an attorney, she dons a custom three-piece suit paired with a vintage trench coat and statement accessories, creating a chic and impactful look. Business casual doesn’t have to be boring—master the art of business casual and redefine law firm fashion. Navigating the balance between professionalism and personal style can be tricky, especially in a law office. But with the right wardrobe choices, you can feel comfortable, confident, and polished during internal office days or virtual meetings. This guide will help you strike that perfect balance between style and professionalism in law firm attire, with tips for elevating your look when unexpected client or court-facing events pop up.
Understanding Law Firm Business Casual
Navigating the dress code in a law firm can be a nuanced endeavor. Law firm business casual is about finding a sweet spot between professional formality and personal comfort. Unlike traditional business professional attire—which typically involves tailored suits, conservative ties, and formal shoes—business casual allows for more flexibility while maintaining a polished appearance.
Critical Differences Between Law Firm Attire Styles
I’ve broken the distinctions between these dress codes to make it easier to understand them into categories. Each one serves a different purpose depending on the situation or event you’re dressing for. Below, I’ll put each attire type in an accordion to help you visualize the differences.
Business Formal is the most conservative dress code for high-stakes situations like court appearances or significant client meetings. These events usually require dark suits, crisp dress shirts, and minimal accessories.
Business Professional is slightly less formal but still quite traditional. Think suits or coordinated skirt-and-blazer combinations, with the option for subtle patterns or colors.
Business Casual Offers more freedom in fabric choices, colors, and styles. Acceptable options include dress pants or skirts paired with blouses, knit tops, or sweaters. Blazers are optional, and footwear can range from flats to low heels.
A law office’s dress code might fall into more than one category. Often, it’s a combination that varies based on daily activities or events. For instance, internal meetings might require business casual attire, while client presentations require business professional attire.
What My Time in Different Legal Settings Taught Me About Dress Codes
Having worked in various legal settings in California, I’ve witnessed firsthand how law firm attire can differ dramatically from one place to another.
In some legal offices, the dress code was quite relaxed. Colleagues wore stylish yet comfortable outfits that fit well within law firm business casual. In our atmosphere, one could expect to see tailored pants with chic blouses, and there was room to express personal style through colors and accessories.
Contrastingly, my time working in a courtroom demanded strict adherence to formal business standards. An unspoken rule was that anything less than a full suit was inappropriate. The formality underscored the seriousness of the environment and left little room for personal wardrobe interpretation.
One memorable experience was at a law firm where the dress code wasn’t clearly defined. Assuming a sleeveless blouse would be acceptable on a warm day, I was surprised when a boss passively aggressively asked, “Where are your sleeves?” This encounter highlighted that, even in seemingly casual environments, there are often unwritten expectations about law firm attire.
Interestingly, the court was the only place that provided a defined dress code. In other settings, it was up to us to discern what was appropriate by observing our bosses and colleagues. These experiences taught me the importance of being attentive to workplace culture and norms, especially when the dress code isn’t explicitly stated.
Essential Wardrobe Staples for Law Firm Clothes
Building a versatile and professional wardrobe for law firm business casual means more than sacrificing comfort or style. A well-curated collection of essential pieces can allow you to mix and match for any internal office day while maintaining a polished appearance. Here are some must-haves for creating adaptable law firm clothes that balance professionalism and personal flair.
Tailored Pants/Slacks
A great pair of tailored pants or slacks is the foundation of any business casual wardrobe. Opt for high-quality fabrics that provide structure without being too stiff, and consider lighter shades like gray, beige, or even subtle patterns. These pants offer versatility for various occasions, pairing well with blouses, knit tops, or blazers.
Blouses and knit tops are essential for law office outfits that feel both polished and comfortable. Go for clean, tailored silhouettes; don’t be afraid to introduce color or prints—keep it professional. Light blues, soft pinks, or floral prints can brighten an outfit without looking too casual.
A fitted blazer can instantly elevate any outfit, while a well-made cardigan offers a slightly softer option. Both pieces work as layering options, allowing you to adjust for different levels of formality. Choose neutral tones like navy, tan, or charcoal for blazers, or wear something more playful for your cardigan on an internal office day.
While heels can still make a statement, there’s no need to limit yourself to pumps. Loafers, ballet flats, and low-heeled ankle boots provide comfort and style in equal measure. Ensure your shoes are clean and in good condition—dirty sneakers or overly casual footwear should be avoided.
Accessories are a great way to show off your personality without breaking the boundaries of law firm fashion. Think understated: simple necklaces, small hoops or studs, and classic watches. Avoid anything too flashy or distracting, and let your jewelry complement your outfit rather than steal the show.
A well-fitting dress or skirt can be an easy go-to for law office outfits. Midi-length dresses in comfortable fabrics like cotton are perfect for keeping things professional without feeling overly formal. Pencil or A-line skirts are also great options, especially with a blouse or knit top and a blazer.
While business casual gives you room to personalize your look, there are a few things to avoid. Ripped jeans, dirty sneakers, and too-revealing shirts or dresses are inappropriate in a professional law firm setting. Even when dress codes are relaxed, it’s essential to maintain a level of formality that reflects the importance of your work and environment.
These essential pieces are the building blocks for any professional, comfortable, stylish wardrobe. Mixing and matching items allows you to create a range of looks appropriate for the office while showcasing your style. You’ll always have something to wear when you focus on versatility, even when plans shift unexpectedly.
How to Dress Business Professional Without a Suit
Blazers Paired with Dress Pants or Skirts
A structured blazer can easily elevate any business casual outfit into a more professional look. Pair it with tailored dress pants or a sleek skirt to create a put-together outfit that can easily transition from an internal meeting to a client lunch. Neutral colors like black, navy, or gray are ideal for the office but don’t hesitate to opt for lighter shades or subtle patterns for more personality.
Fitted Dresses with a Blazer or Casual Jacket
A well-fitted dress can be both stylish and professional. Choose knee-length or midi dresses with clean lines and neutral or muted colors to keep the look business-appropriate. Layering a blazer or a structured jacket over the dress instantly takes it up a notch, allowing you to remove the jacket for a more relaxed office vibe and add it back when you need a more formal appearance.

There I was, envisioning a typical day ahead filled with Word and Adobe, when an unexpected turn of events unfolded. As I stepped into the lobby, a group of colleagues intercepted me with urgency in their voices. “Hurry, Shannon, we just called an Uber… we’re heading to court to watch (our boss’s) trial,” they exclaimed. This sudden shift from a predictable day at the law firm to the buzzing atmosphere of a courtroom trial is a vivid reminder of the legal profession’s unpredictability.
It underscores a truth every legal professional knows all too well: the paramount importance of always being prepared, not just with case management but also in appearance. However, maintaining a professional and confident look, especially when time is of the essence, presents challenges. From the high costs of law firm attire to the inconvenience of piecing together the perfect courtroom ensemble at the last minute, pursuing professionalism can often feel daunting. Yet, as we navigate these challenges, finding cost-effective and efficient solutions becomes crucial for every legal professional committed to making commanding impressions.
These challenges also bring hidden chances to elevate your preparedness and professionalism. The idea of an emergency attire kit shines as a brilliant solution, helping you gracefully manage the unpredictable waves of a legal career. With such a kit, being prepared is easily within reach, transforming the uncertainties of your profession into opportunities to showcase your steadfast professionalism and confidence.
Let’s delve into the essential components that form the cornerstone of an effective emergency kit, designed to uphold your professional appearance and confidence in the courtroom or at client meetings.
Clothing Essentials
At the heart of your emergency kit are the clothing essentials. A neutral blazer or suit jacket stands as a versatile piece, instantly elevating any outfit to meet the standards of law firm fashion. Pair it with a white or light-colored button-down shirt or blouse for a professional look. Dress shoes, carefully selected for comfort and style, ensure you’re always ready to stand your ground. A tie adds a touch of formal sophistication for men, while women can opt for a statement necklace to accentuate their ensemble with elegance.
Life’s little accidents shouldn’t undermine your courtroom appearance. A compact sewing kit stands as a vital tool for minor repairs, keeping your attire flawless. Instant stain remover pens or wipes come to the rescue for unforeseen spills, ensuring your law firm clothes stay spotless. Double-sided tape is indispensable for addressing any sudden wardrobe mishaps, allowing you to concentrate on your legal arguments. Adding to these essentials, the Conair Power Steam Handheld Travel Garment Steamer is a game-changer, offering a quick way to smooth out wrinkles and refresh your outfit, ensuring you look polished and professional in no time.
Maintaining freshness throughout the day is crucial. Deodorant wipes or a mini stick can offer a quick refresh, keeping you feeling confident. A miniature bottle of perfume or cologne ensures you leave a lasting impression, both in presence and aroma. Don’t forget dental floss or breath mints to maintain fresh breath, which is critical for close-quarters discussions and consultations.
A well-groomed appearance can speak volumes about your attention to detail. A comb or portable hairbrush keeps your hair neat and professional, while clear nail polish serves dual purposes: addressing runs in stockings and providing a quick fix for chipped nails. Hair ties and bobby pins allow for quick hair adjustments, ensuring your appearance remains polished and unflustered.
The final puzzle piece is storage—a durable, compact bag or container that neatly holds all your emergency kit items. This container should be easy to carry and discreet enough to fit in your office drawer or car, ensuring your emergency attire kit is always within reach when needed.
Together, these components form a comprehensive emergency attire kit, a testament to legal professionals’ meticulous preparation and resilience. Equipped with this kit, you’re not just preparing for the unexpected but embracing it, ready to present your best self in any situation.
The life of a legal professional is filled with unpredictability, demanding not only mental acuity but also a meticulous presentation that commands respect and authority. The creation and maintenance of an emergency attire kit are not merely acts of foresight; they are integral to navigating the challenges of the legal profession with grace and confidence. By customizing a kit to your personal and professional needs, ensuring its accessibility, and committing to its regular upkeep, you can face unexpected situations head-on without compromising your professional image. Going a step further by having a backup outfit and utilizing digital tools for wardrobe planning places you at the forefront of preparedness, allowing you to focus on your legal responsibilities with one less worry.

“How am I going to pump during all day trials?!” I thought to myself realizing I had a problem to solve before I started my new job.
I working as a court clerk when I was six months postpartum and exclusively breastfeeding. I made the mistake of not pumping enough before I started work, but that was only one of my problems. The bigger problem I had was figuring out how I was going to pump three times a day when I was in an all-day trial.
I had heard about the new wave of wearable breast pumps, and it was one of the positives about returning to work while nursing.
I opted for an Elvie pump over a Willow Wearable Breast Pump because Elvie’s storage containers held 5 oz while Willow’s held 4 oz. (The Willow Go can hold 5-7 oz in a resuablr container). I was blessed with a heavy supply, and I envisioned being able to pump without having to replace the container halfway through.
If you’re a clerk, judge, attorney, or courtroom officer that pumps during your workday, Elvie is worth learning more about.
I wouldn’t exactly call it comfortable. To be fair – I can’t imagine any pump being comfortable. It didn’t hurt, and I felt the suction was too weak compared to my son.
Do they show under your clothes?
They did not draw any extra attention to me when I wore them while at my desk. They aren’t conspicuous enough for me to wear in court, but they’re perfect for remote appearances.
Noise
Was it silent? No. Was it quieter than any other pump I’ve ever used? Yes.
Will it get picked up by a court mic? No. Will the person sitting next to you hear it? Probably not, but maybe. Zoom won’t pick it up at all if you set your ‘suppress background noise’ settings to high.
Efficiency
Elvie claims that their Elvie Pump is “The silent, wearable electric breast pump designed to discreetly slip inside your bra… Controlled through your phone for the most seamless experience, Elvie Pump is wire-free, hands-free, and hassle-free.
I found that less than half of the above statements to be true. The Elvie pump did not discreetly slip inside my bra, and I wouldn’t exactly call my experience hassle-free.
Reviews vary widely, with some raving of its functionality and others saying the suction didn’t work.
One of my pump’s suctions felt much stronger than the other. So much so that I emailed Elvie asking if I possibly had a faulty product. They responded promptly were friendly, but the resources they gave me didn’t help.
Another problem I had was needing to see my nipples to make sure they were in the right position to release milk. Even if I put the Elvie pumps in my bra before court, I needed to readjust before I began pumping.
At this point, I realized that I couldn’t pump during court this way. So I went to the mothers room before court during lunch and after court and would use my laptop to work while I pumped.
Ultimately, the Elvie was just too slow, and I was spending too much time trying to make it work.
Battery life
The Elive pumps charge by micro-USB for 2.5 hours of pumping. I never ran out of battery. Charging the pumps at night got me through the day.
The pumps are controlled with a phone app. I ran out of battery on that was and left to use the buttons on the top. The problem with this is, I couldn’t tell if they was pumping. I relied on the app for that, and I didn’t have a ton of time trying to trouble shoot. It was frustrating.
Alternatives
The Willow Pump is the only true alternative that can compete with Elvie in terms of size and portability. They have two options:
• This model is a wearable, double electric breast pump. It’s known for its 100% leak-proof design which allows 360° mobility, enabling mothers to pump in any position.
• It features a hospital-grade suction which mimics a baby’s natural nursing rhythm, contributing to effective milk expression.
• It offers the unique option to pump into either spill-proof milk bags or reusable containers. The milk bags enable total mobility, while the containers offer 180-degree mobility.
• It connects to a smartphone or Apple Watch, allowing users to track and manage pumping sessions easily.
• The Willow 3.0 is priced higher than traditional pumps and might not be fully covered by insurance.
• Similar to the Willow 3.0, it features a completely in-bra design, allowing hands-free and untethered usage.
• However, it does not offer the same range of motion as the Willow 3.0.
• The Willow Go utilizes “tug and release” suction technology, comparable to traditional pumps and other wearable pump brands.
• It is compatible only with reusable containers, not with spill-proof milk bags.
• It is priced lower than the Willow 3.0 by $150 and may not be fully covered by insurance.
Both pumps are app-connected and offer smart features like real-time tracking of volume and session history recording. The Willow 3.0, however, offers more advanced smart pumping capabilities, including smart suction technology that adjusts based on user preferences.

The legal world is witnessing a transformative cultural shift in attire, moving from the staunch formality of yesteryears to a more dynamic and approachable business casual aesthetic. This change isn’t just about fashion; it symbolizes a deeper evolution in the legal industry – a move towards inclusivity, adaptability, and a recognition of individuality. This shift brings with it new challenges:
How do you maintain the revered professionalism of a lawyer while embracing a more relaxed dress code?
My blog post offers a solution to this modern conundrum. It serves as your guide to navigating these new waters with confidence, providing insights and practical tips to meld the traditional with the contemporary, ensuring that your wardrobe is not just a reflection of changing times, but a testament to your professional acumen and personal style.
Business casual dress codes typically allow employees to wear more relaxed clothing, such as slacks, khakis, and dress shirts, while still maintaining a professional appearance. This shift towards a more casual dress code has been embraced by many law firms, who recognize that it can help to create a more relaxed and comfortable working environment. Additionally, many younger employees prefer a more relaxed dress code, and law firms are keen to attract and retain these employees in order to remain competitive in a rapidly changing legal landscape.
Understanding Business Casual
Business casual is a dress code that is commonly used in professional settings. It is a style of dress that is less formal than traditional business dress but still maintains a level of professionalism. Business casual dress is typically worn in settings where employees do not interact with clients or customers on a regular basis.
Business casual dress can vary depending on the company and industry. In general, business casual dress includes items such as dress pants, khaki pants, collared shirts, dress shirts, and blouses. Clothing items that are typically not considered business casual include jeans, shorts, t-shirts, and sneakers.
It is important to note that while business casual dress is less formal than traditional business dress, it is still important to dress professionally. Clothing should be clean, pressed, and free of wrinkles. Accessories should be kept to a minimum, and shoes should be clean and polished.
When in doubt about what is appropriate for business casual dress, it is always best to err on the side of caution and dress more formally. It is better to be overdressed than underdressed in a professional setting.
Overall, business casual dress is a style of dress that is comfortable and less formal than traditional business dress, but still maintains a level of professionalism. It is important to understand the dress code of your workplace and dress accordingly to maintain a professional image.
Key Elements of Business Casual for Law Firms
When it comes to dressing for work, law firms have a reputation for being more formal and conservative than other industries. However, in recent years, many firms have adopted a business casual dress code to accommodate changing workplace norms and attract new talent. Here are some key elements of business casual attire for law firms:
Pants and Suits
For male lawyers, a dark-colored suit with a solid-colored shirt and tie is still the most appropriate option for formal occasions. However, for less formal occasions, a blazer or sports coat paired with khaki or gray pants can be a suitable alternative. It is important to avoid shorts, jeans, and any other casual pants.
For female lawyers, a pantsuit or blazer paired with dress pants or a skirt is a popular choice. It is essential to ensure that the suit is well-tailored and made of a high-quality fabric. A conservative, solid-colored suit is always a safe option.
Shoes
Shoes are an essential component of any outfit, and they should be chosen carefully to ensure they complement the rest of the attire. For male lawyers, black or brown leather shoes are the most appropriate option. For female lawyers, closed-toe pumps or flats are a safe choice. It is important to avoid sandals or any other open-toe shoes.
Sweaters
Sweaters can be a great addition to any business casual outfit, particularly during the winter months. For male lawyers, a solid-colored sweater can be paired with a dress shirt and tie. For female lawyers, a sweater can be worn over a blouse or paired with a skirt or dress pants.
Style and Accessories
When it comes to business casual attire, it is important to keep accessories to a minimum. For male lawyers, a watch and a simple tie clip can be worn to complement the outfit. For female lawyers, a simple necklace or pair of earrings can be worn. It is important to avoid any flashy or distracting accessories.
In conclusion, business casual attire for law firms should be conservative, professional, and well-tailored. By following these key elements, lawyers can ensure they are appropriately dressed for any occasion.
Appropriate Attire for Male Lawyers
Male attorneys have a variety of options when it comes to dressing in business casual attire. While the traditional suit and tie may be expected in certain settings, there are other options that can be just as professional and appropriate.
One option is a long-sleeved dress shirt, which can be paired with dress pants or khakis. This is a classic look that is always appropriate in a business setting. A tie can be added for a more formal look, or left off for a more relaxed appearance.
Another option is a polo shirt, which can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. A collared polo shirt can be paired with dress pants and loafers for a professional look, or with khakis and sneakers for a more casual look.
For those who want to add a touch of personality to their outfit, a bow tie can be a fun accessory. However, it is important to make sure that the bow tie is not too flashy or distracting.
When it comes to shoes, loafers are a classic choice for male attorneys. They are comfortable and professional, and can be worn with a variety of outfits.
Overall, male attorneys should aim for a professional and polished look when dressing in business casual attire. Whether they choose to wear a tie or opt for a more relaxed look, it is important to make sure that their outfit is appropriate for the occasion.
Appropriate Attire for Female Lawyers
Female attorneys should dress professionally and appropriately for the workplace. While business casual attire is often acceptable, it is important to remember that the legal profession is one that requires a certain level of formality. Here are some guidelines for appropriate attire for female lawyers:
Skirts
Knee-length skirts are appropriate for female lawyers. It is important to ensure that the skirt is not too tight or too short. A-line skirts are a good choice, as they are both professional and comfortable.
Blouses
Blouses are a great option for female lawyers. They should be conservative and not too revealing. It is best to avoid tank tops or anything too low-cut.
Jewelry
Jewelry should be kept to a minimum. A simple necklace or stud earrings are appropriate. It is best to avoid anything too flashy or distracting.
Footwear
Flats or heels are both appropriate for female attorneys. It is important to ensure that the shoes are comfortable and professional-looking.
Overall, female lawyers should aim for a professional and polished look. It is important to remember that the legal profession is one that requires a certain level of formality, even in a business casual setting. By following these guidelines, female attorneys can ensure that they are dressed appropriately for the workplace.
Considerations for Client Meetings
When attending client meetings, it is important for law firm professionals to dress in a manner that conveys professionalism and credibility. The outfit should be business casual, with a focus on comfort and practicality.
Clients expect their lawyers to be knowledgeable and confident, and dressing appropriately can help establish this impression. It is important to know the client’s industry and dress accordingly. For example, a lawyer meeting with a client in the finance industry may want to dress more formally, while a lawyer meeting with a client in the tech industry may be able to dress more casually.
In addition to the outfit itself, accessories can also play a role in conveying professionalism. A high-quality briefcase or bag can demonstrate attention to detail and organization, while a well-maintained watch can indicate punctuality and reliability.
Ultimately, the goal of dressing for client meetings is to create a positive first impression and establish credibility. By dressing appropriately and paying attention to details, law firm professionals can convey confidence and knowledge to their clients.
Dressing Down: Casual Friday and Jeans
Casual Friday is a popular concept in many offices, including law firms. It allows employees to dress down and wear more casual clothing than they would on other days of the week. However, it is important to remember that even on Casual Friday, employees are still representing their law firm and should dress appropriately.
When it comes to jeans, many law firms allow them on Casual Friday. However, it is important to choose the right pair of jeans. Avoid anything too distressed or ripped, and opt for a darker wash. Pair them with a collared shirt or blouse and dress shoes or boots to maintain a professional look.
Accessories can also play a role in dressing down while still looking professional. For example, a statement watch or piece of jewelry can add a touch of personality to an outfit without being too distracting. However, it is important to avoid anything too flashy or gaudy.
In summary, Casual Friday and jeans can be a great way to dress down and feel more comfortable in the workplace. However, it is important to choose appropriate clothing and accessories to maintain a professional image and represent the law firm in a positive light.
Navigating Dress Codes in the Legal Industry
Dress codes in the legal industry can be a tricky subject to navigate. While some law firms have strict dress codes, others may have more relaxed policies. It’s important for attorneys and lawyers to understand the dress code expectations of their firm and the legal industry as a whole.
Dress Codes
Dress codes can vary widely among law firms. Some may require business formal attire, such as a suit and tie for men and a pantsuit or skirt suit for women. Other firms may have a business casual dress code, allowing for more relaxed attire such as slacks and a collared shirt for men and a blouse and slacks or a skirt for women.
It’s important for lawyers to understand their firm’s dress code policy and adhere to it. Dressing appropriately can help convey a professional image to clients and colleagues.
Law Firms
Law firms may have different dress codes depending on their practice area and client base. For example, a law firm specializing in corporate law may have a more formal dress code than a firm specializing in criminal defense.
It’s important for lawyers to research their firm’s dress code policy before starting work and to ask questions if they are unsure about what is appropriate attire.
Attorneys
Attorneys should dress in a manner that reflects their professionalism and the seriousness of their work. This means dressing in a way that is clean, neat, and appropriate for the setting.
In addition, attorneys should consider the expectations of their clients. For example, if an attorney is meeting with a client in a conservative industry, such as finance or banking, they may want to dress more formally than if they were meeting with a client in a creative industry, such as advertising or fashion.
Lawyers Wear
Lawyers should avoid wearing clothing that is too casual or revealing. This includes items such as shorts, flip flops, tank tops, and clothing with offensive slogans or graphics.
In addition, lawyers should avoid wearing clothing that is too flashy or attention-grabbing. This can include clothing with bright colors or bold patterns.
Legal Industry
The legal industry is generally considered to be more conservative than other industries. As such, lawyers should err on the side of caution when it comes to their attire.
While some law firms may have more relaxed dress codes, lawyers should always dress in a manner that is professional and appropriate for the setting. This can help convey a sense of competence and professionalism to clients and colleagues alike.
Impact of Pandemic on Law Firm Dress Code
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on many aspects of our lives, including the way we dress for work. Law firms, in particular, have had to adjust their dress codes to accommodate the changing circumstances brought about by the pandemic.
One of the most noticeable changes has been the shift towards more casual attire. With many law firms operating remotely or implementing flexible work arrangements, there is less need for employees to wear formal business attire. Instead, many law firms have adopted a business casual dress code, which allows employees to dress in more comfortable and relaxed clothing.
However, it is important to note that business casual does not mean sloppy or unkempt. Employees are still expected to look professional and put-together, even if they are not wearing a suit and tie. This means avoiding clothing that is too revealing, too casual, or too worn out.
Another factor that has influenced the law firm dress code during the pandemic is the need for personal protective equipment (PPE). In some cases, law firm employees may be required to wear masks, gloves, or other forms of PPE to protect themselves and others from the spread of COVID-19. This may require adjustments to clothing choices, such as avoiding clothing that is too loose or too tight-fitting.
Overall, the pandemic has led to a shift towards more casual and comfortable attire in law firms, while still maintaining a professional appearance. As the pandemic continues to evolve, it is likely that the dress code will continue to adapt to meet the changing needs of employees and clients alike.
Conclusion
In conclusion, choosing the appropriate business casual outfit for a law firm is an important aspect of maintaining a professional image while still being comfortable. It is essential to focus on the nature of the work and the expectations of clients when selecting an outfit.
Law firm employees should avoid overly casual attire such as t-shirts, shorts, and flip flops. Instead, they should opt for collared shirts, dress pants, and closed-toe shoes. Accessories like ties, scarves, and jewelry can add a touch of personality to the outfit while still maintaining a professional look.
It is important to remember that the outfit should not be too distracting or revealing. Clothes that are too tight or too revealing can be inappropriate in a professional setting. Additionally, employees should ensure that their clothes are clean, pressed, and in good condition.
Overall, the key to dressing appropriately for a law firm is to strike a balance between professionalism and comfort. By choosing the right outfit, employees can project a professional image while still feeling comfortable and confident.

The legal world has been rapidly moving to virtual offices and remote work setups. This change has its perks, like ditching the daily commute, but it also brings its own set of challenges. One of the most common? Figuring out what to wear. Just because you’re in your home office or at your kitchen table doesn’t mean professionalism goes out the window. In fact, dressing for success, even at home, can boost your productivity and keep you in the right work mindset. Whether you’re working for a law firm, handling freelance paralegal tasks, or navigating your own small law practice, what you wear matters. In this post, we’ll explore how to dress productively for virtual law office life. And stick around, because I’ve created a handy Notion Wardrobe Planner for Professionals to help you plan your work-from-home outfits.
The Psychology of Dressing for Success at Home
We’ve all heard the phrase “dress for success,” but have you ever stopped to consider why this mantra resonates with so many? It’s not just about looking good; it’s deeply rooted in psychology.
Your choice of attire has a direct impact on your mood, mindset, and overall productivity. Picture this: lounging in pajamas might feel ultra-comfortable, but does it really put you in the mood to tackle that intricate legal brief or prepare for an intense client consultation? On the flip side, wearing an outfit that makes you feel confident can supercharge your motivation, making tasks seem less daunting and boosting your focus.
Research backs this up. Studies have shown that dressing up, even when working from home, has tangible benefits. Employees who dress more formally for remote work report feeling more professional, attentive, and prepared compared to days they dress casually. Furthermore, dressing up can create a mental distinction between “work time” and “personal time,” helping to set clear boundaries when working from home.
So, while the temptation to stay in relaxed attire might be strong, there’s a lot to be said for putting on an outfit that makes you feel like the skilled legal professional you are, even if it’s just for the living room.
The Pitfalls of Over-Casual Attire
There’s no denying the allure of loungewear, especially when working from home. Soft sweatpants, cozy hoodies, and fluffy slippers – it’s the ultimate comfort package that many of us gravitate towards, especially when the office is just a few steps away from our bed. But as inviting as this sounds, it’s worth considering the potential downsides.
First, let’s talk about motivation. While there’s something undeniably luxurious about working in your favorite pajamas, this level of comfort can blur the lines between relaxation and work mode. The result? You might find it harder to shift into high gear and maintain the same level of concentration you would in more professional attire. Dressing too casually can subtly send a message to your brain that it’s time to chill, not work.
Then there’s the matter of virtual meetings. With remote work, video calls have become the new conference rooms. Even if you’re only visible from the waist up, a too-casual look can leave an unintended impression. It’s not just about what your colleagues think; it’s about how you feel. Showing up in a relaxed tee might make you feel underprepared, even if you’ve done all the prep work. The last thing you’d want is to feel self-conscious about your attire when you should be focusing on the meeting’s content.
In a nutshell, while embracing the comfort of home is one of the perks of remote work, it’s worth striking a balance. Overly casual attire might seem like a small detail, but it can have outsized effects on both our motivation and the image we project to others.
Essential Wardrobe Pieces for a Home-Based Legal Professional
Navigating the world of home-based work attire might seem daunting, but having a few key pieces in your wardrobe can make all the difference. These essentials will ensure you look professional for those impromptu video calls, while also keeping you comfy as you power through your day.
Professional Tops for Video Calls
When it comes to virtual meetings, it’s often the top half that gets the spotlight. So, making sure you have a collection of professional tops is crucial:
Neutral blazers or jackets: A well-fitted blazer can instantly elevate even the simplest of outfits. Opt for neutrals like black, navy, or grey which are versatile and easy to pair.
Collared shirts, blouses, and tops: Stick to solid colors or subtle patterns. A crisp white shirt or a soft-hued blouse can strike the perfect balance between formal and comfortable.
Comfortable Yet Professional Bottoms
Let’s be honest, while our tops need to be video-call ready, our bottoms can afford to be a bit more relaxed.
Dress pants that are comfortable for home wear: Look for materials that have a bit of stretch. This ensures you’re comfortable, especially if you’re moving between your desk and home tasks.
A shift away from the typical suit: Gone are the days of stiff suits. Embrace bottoms that maintain a polished appearance but offer a bit more freedom and comfort.
Footwear: Finding the Balance
Believe it or not, your choice of footwear, even at home, can influence your work mode.
The benefits of wearing shoes at home: Slipping into a pair of shoes can signal your brain that it’s work time. It creates a ritual, transitioning you from relaxation to work mode.
Comfortable yet presentable footwear options: Consider loafers, ballet flats, or any shoe that’s easy to slip on but still looks polished. Remember, it’s all about finding that balance between comfort and professionalism, right down to your toes.
With these wardrobe essentials, you’ll be well-prepared to tackle your workday, feeling both comfortable and confident in your home-based legal environment.
Setting the Scene: Background and Lighting
While attire is a significant part of presenting oneself professionally, the environment you’re in plays an equally crucial role, especially in virtual settings. A thoughtfully curated background and proper lighting can enhance your professional image during video calls and virtual meetings.
Importance of a Professional-Looking Background for Video Calls
Your background tells a story. Whether it’s a curated bookshelf, a clean neutral wall, or a tasteful piece of art, it conveys a message about your professionalism and attention to detail. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Declutter: A cluttered background can be distracting and might make you appear disorganized. A quick tidying up can work wonders.
Keep it Neutral: Avoid overly bright colors or busy patterns. A neutral setting helps keep the focus on you.
Personal Touch: While a professional look is essential, a little personal touch, like a plant or a framed picture, can add warmth and make you more relatable.
Tips on Lighting to Ensure a Clear and Flattering Image on Camera
Good lighting can be a game-changer. It can make you look more alert, focused, and create a more professional appearance.
Natural Light: Whenever possible, set up your workspace near a window. Natural light is the most flattering and gives a soft glow to your skin.
Avoid Backlighting: Ensure that light sources are in front of you, not behind. Backlighting can make you appear as a silhouette.
Invest in a Ring Light: If natural light isn’t an option, consider purchasing a ring light. They’re affordable, adjustable, and can significantly improve your video quality.
Remember, in virtual meetings, your background and lighting serve as your “first impression.” Taking a bit of time to perfect them can significantly enhance your professional presence in the digital realm.
Personal Grooming in the Virtual Environment
In the digital age of work, while our environment and attire adapt to our homes, personal grooming remains a constant. It’s more than just aesthetics—it’s about feeling your best, showcasing professionalism, and setting a positive tone for the day.
Hair and Face
Maintaining a Groomed Appearance: Even if you opt for a more relaxed look at home, it’s essential to appear neat and tidy. For hair, this could mean a simple ponytail, bun, or a well-combed look for shorter styles. For the face, it doesn’t always mean full makeup, but perhaps a touch of moisturizer, a neat brow, or a splash of lip color to brighten things up. It’s all about looking fresh and ready for the day.
The Importance of Routine
Setting the Tone with Morning Rituals: Sticking to a morning grooming routine isn’t just about looking good; it’s about feeling good too. By maintaining these rituals, you signal to your brain that it’s time to transition from rest to work mode. It could be as simple as a quick skincare routine, brushing your hair, or even just splashing cold water on your face. These small acts have a big impact, mentally preparing you for a productive day ahead.
In a virtual environment, where screen-to-screen interactions are the norm, personal grooming remains a testament to your dedication, professionalism, and self-respect. It’s a subtle yet powerful tool in crafting a positive and productive workday.
Embracing Flexibility While Retaining Professionalism
The remote work environment offers an unprecedented level of flexibility, but with it comes the challenge of navigating how to present oneself. The key is finding a sweet spot, a balance between the comforts of home and the demands of professional life.
Balancing Comfort with Professionalism in a Home Environment
The beauty of working from home lies in the ability to merge comfort with professional attire. Think of it as building a bridge between your favorite cozy sweater and that sharp blazer. Maybe it’s a soft, form-fitting top paired with a stylish necklace for that touch of elegance, or perhaps it’s those stretchy dress pants that feel like pajamas but look ready for a board meeting. By marrying these worlds, you can enjoy the best of both comfort and professionalism.
The Concept of “Dressing Up” for Important Calls or to Boost Morale and Productivity
There will be days when you have a pivotal client call or a significant meeting. On such occasions, “dressing up” can be more than just about appearances. It’s a mental and emotional boost, equipping you with added confidence. Moreover, occasionally choosing to dress a notch above your daily attire, even if you have no meetings scheduled, can work wonders for your mood and productivity. It’s like a little pep talk you give yourself, a nudge that says, “Today, I’m going all out.”
Embracing the flexibility of home-based work doesn’t mean letting go of professionalism. It’s about adapting and finding new ways to showcase your dedication and zeal, even if it’s just to an audience of one.
Tips for Staying Productive in a Home Office
Maintaining productivity in a home office can be a challenge. Without the usual office surroundings and routines, it’s easy to drift into a more relaxed mindset. However, with a few strategic habits and routines, you can recreate an environment that fosters focus and efficiency.
Creating Boundaries
Designating a Specific Workspace: It’s vital to have a dedicated space for work, whether it’s an entire room, a desk in the corner, or even a specific spot at the kitchen table. This not only helps mentally but physically separates “work” from “home.” The key is consistency—using this space solely for work ensures that when you’re there, you’re in work mode.
Keeping it Separate from Leisure Areas: Resist the temptation to work from the couch or bed. These are areas typically associated with relaxation, and blending them with work can dilute your focus and disrupt your work-life balance.
Dressing the Part
Shifting into “Work Mode”: Your attire sets the tone for your day. By changing into work clothes, even if it’s a simpler version of what you’d wear to an office, you signal to yourself that it’s time to get down to business. It’s like a uniform for productivity, helping differentiate between casual home time and dedicated work time.
Regular Breaks and Self-care
The Importance of Taking Breaks: All work and no play can lead to burnout, even at home. Ensure you take regular breaks—step outside for fresh air, stretch, or even do a quick chore. These moments allow your brain to reset, making you more efficient when you return to your tasks.
Integrating Moments of Relaxation: Just because you’re working from home doesn’t mean you should deprive yourself of moments of relaxation. Whether it’s a five-minute meditation, listening to a favorite song, or sipping on a cup of tea, these pockets of calm can rejuvenate you and improve your overall productivity.
With these tips in place, your home office can become a haven of productivity, marrying the comforts of home with the discipline and drive of a professional environment.

The Historical Importance of Dress in the Legal Profession
Throughout history, the attire of legal professionals has played a pivotal role in shaping the perception of the legal world. The legal profession has always been steeped in tradition and formality, and the attire of lawyers and judges has been no exception. A lawyer’s dress has been a symbol of their authority, knowledge, and commitment to the law, often dictating how they are perceived by both their peers and the public. Let’s take a brief journey through time to explore how attire has influenced the image of legal professionals.
In the Middle Ages, when the legal system was in its infancy, legal attire served as a badge of honor and a means of distinguishing lawyers from the general population. One iconic garment from this era was the robe, a flowing garment often made of wool or other fine materials, signifying a lawyer’s authority and dedication to justice. The robe’s somber and dignified appearance communicated a sense of gravitas and impartiality, essential qualities for legal professionals.
Moving forward to the 17th and 18th centuries, we see the emergence of the powdered wig as a defining element of legal attire, particularly in England. These wigs, with their distinctive white curls, symbolized wisdom and intellect. Judges and barristers wore them as a mark of their legal prowess and knowledge, and they became synonymous with the legal profession during this era. The legal profession’s commitment to tradition and adherence to established norms was reflected in this elaborate accessory.
In the modern era, legal attire has evolved, becoming less elaborate but still maintaining a sense of formality. The traditional courtroom attire of a dark suit, white shirt, and tie has become a universal symbol of professionalism and respect for the law. The legal community has adapted to changing societal norms and expectations while preserving the essence of professionalism through its dress code.
To conclude this section, the historical importance of dress in the legal profession cannot be overstated. Attire has not only served as a means of identification but has also conveyed values, principles, and a sense of authority. From the flowing robes of the Middle Ages to the iconic powdered wigs of the Enlightenment, the evolution of legal attire mirrors the evolving perceptions of the legal profession over time. Today, while the specifics of legal attire may vary, the enduring message remains clear: attire is a reflection of the legal profession’s commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law.
Perception Equals Reality
In the legal world, perception often equates to reality. Your professional attire can significantly influence how clients, juries, and colleagues perceive you, ultimately shaping their expectations of your competence and credibility. The psychology behind this phenomenon is rooted in the power of first impressions, a concept well-documented in both scientific studies and real-world anecdotes.
Numerous studies have highlighted the profound impact of attire on the perception of individuals in professional settings. Dressing professionally not only conveys competence but also instills a sense of trust and confidence in others. When an attorney enters the courtroom or a meeting impeccably dressed, they not only signal their respect for the proceedings but also command the respect of those around them. First impressions happen in a matter of seconds, and your attire plays a pivotal role in making a lasting and positive one.
Let’s take a cue from everyone’s favorite legal drama, “Suits.” While it’s all fiction, it paints a vivid picture of the real-world significance of professional attire in our industry. Think of Harvey, Donna, and the gang strutting through the halls of Pearson Specter Litt in their impeccable suits and designer shoes. It’s not just about looking good; it’s about projecting an image of confidence, competence, and attention to detail.
In the legal world, we may not be dealing with high-stakes drama like they do on the show, but the core message is clear: perception matters. Your attire isn’t just a way to express your style; it’s a potent tool for shaping how others perceive you. So, while you might not have Donna’s impeccable fashion sense or Harvey’s confidence, you can undoubtedly utilize the influence of professional attire to leave a lasting impression in the legal field.
So, to reiterate, the adage “dress for success” holds particular significance in the legal profession. The psychological impact of professional attire cannot be underestimated, as it influences the way clients, juries, and colleagues perceive your abilities and character. Scientific research and cultural examples like “Suits” reaffirm the age-old wisdom that first impressions count. In the legal world, where credibility and trust are paramount, investing in your image through professional attire can yield tangible returns by shaping the reality of how you are perceived and ultimately contributing to your success.
The Tangible Benefits of Dressing Professionally
Increased Confidence: One of the most tangible benefits of dressing professionally in the legal industry is the remarkable boost in self-confidence and overall performance. When you put on well-fitted attire that aligns with the expectations of your profession, you not only look the part but also feel it. Research has consistently shown that what you wear can directly impact your psychological state. In essence, when you dress professionally, you’re sending a signal to your brain that you’re ready to take on the challenges of the day with poise and competence.
The confidence derived from dressing well is not just superficial; it translates into tangible advantages. Lawyers who exude confidence are more likely to assert themselves effectively in negotiations, present their cases persuasively in court, and build stronger connections with clients and colleagues. Your attire becomes a form of armor, helping you tackle even the most daunting legal tasks with assurance. In this way, the ROI of professional attire manifests itself in the form of enhanced performance and a greater sense of self-assuredness.
Networking Opportunities: Professional attire can be a game-changer when it comes to networking in the legal industry. When you attend events, conferences, or meetings, your attire is often the first thing people notice. Dressing professionally not only helps you make a memorable impression but also ensures that you are taken seriously by peers, potential clients, and industry influencers. In a sea of faces, your attire can serve as a powerful identifier, helping you stand out and facilitating meaningful connections.
Consider this scenario: you’re at a legal conference, and amidst the sea of attendees, you’re one in a well-tailored suit or a stylish professional outfit. Your attire not only commands attention but also signals to others that you respect the importance of the event. This can lead to more meaningful conversations, collaboration opportunities, and, ultimately, a more extensive professional network. In this sense, the ROI of dressing professionally becomes evident in the form of increased networking opportunities and the potential for career advancement.
Influencing Case Outcomes: In the courtroom, the impact of professional attire extends beyond personal confidence and networking. It can potentially sway case outcomes. Studies have suggested that jury perceptions can be significantly influenced by an attorney’s appearance. When lawyers present themselves in a manner that aligns with the expectations of professionalism and credibility, they may find it easier to establish trust with jurors.
Jurors are often swayed by subtle cues, and your attire can be one of those cues. When jurors see an attorney who is well-dressed and composed, it can positively affect their perception of the attorney’s competence and the credibility of their arguments. While it’s not a guarantee of success, dressing professionally can be a strategic choice to enhance your persuasive power in the courtroom. The ROI in this context can be the difference between a favorable verdict and an unfavorable one.
In the legal world, the tangible benefits of dressing professionally are undeniable. From increased confidence and networking opportunities to the potential to influence case outcomes, the impact of your attire goes far beyond aesthetics. As we delve into the intangible benefits of dressing professionally in the next section, we’ll uncover even more reasons why investing in your image can be a savvy career move in the legal industry.
The Intangible Benefits of Dressing Professionally
Enhanced Credibility: Beyond the tangible advantages, dressing professionally in the legal industry offers a wealth of intangible benefits, starting with enhanced credibility. Your attire serves as a visual representation of your commitment to your profession and your clients. When clients and colleagues see you consistently dressed in professional attire, it builds trust and confidence in your abilities. They’re more likely to believe in your expertise and rely on your guidance, knowing that you take your role seriously.
In a profession where credibility can be a deciding factor in a case or negotiation, the power of a well-maintained image cannot be understated. It conveys to clients that they are in capable hands, and to colleagues, it signifies that you are a dependable and respected member of the legal community. Ultimately, this enhanced credibility can open doors to exciting opportunities, establish you as a trusted authority in your field, and contribute to long-lasting professional relationships.
Personal Branding: Just like companies have brands that define their identity and reputation, lawyers and paralegals have personal brands. Your attire choices contribute significantly to your personal and professional brand in the legal world. Every outfit you select, from the way you wear your tie to the accessories you choose, communicates something about who you are as a legal professional. Whether you aim to project reliability, innovation, or a unique approach to the practice of law, your attire plays a vital role in shaping that narrative.
Your personal brand is not just about how you dress but also how you carry yourself, interact with clients, and handle cases. Dressing professionally aligns your brand with the values of competence, respect, and professionalism, reinforcing the image you want to convey to the world. Over time, a strong personal brand can lead to recognition and a loyal client base, helping you stand out in a crowded legal landscape.
Creating a Workplace Culture: The choices you make regarding your attire can also extend beyond your image and influence the culture of your workplace. Whether you’re a senior partner or a junior associate, your attire sets a precedent for what is deemed acceptable within your office. By consistently dressing professionally, you create an atmosphere of respect for the profession and the clients you serve.
In a law firm or legal department, a shared commitment to professionalism in attire can foster a culture of discipline, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic. This can positively impact the overall performance of the team and the quality of legal services provided. In essence, your attire choices can ripple through your workplace, influencing colleagues and promoting a work environment that values excellence and dedication.
In the legal world, the intangible benefits of dressing professionally are interwoven with the fabric of your reputation and the culture of your workplace. It’s not just about what you wear; it’s about the message you convey and the impact you have on those around you. As we explore the practical tips for maintaining a professional image in the next section, keep in mind that the intangible benefits are just as essential, if not more so, than the visible ones.
The True ROI: Breaking Down the Investment and Returns
Cost vs. Value: When we talk about the ROI of professional attire in the legal industry, it’s essential to consider the financial cost against the potential benefits. While quality professional attire can be an investment, it’s worth examining the value it brings to your career. The cost of a well-tailored suit or a high-quality blouse might seem substantial upfront, but the returns can be substantial as well. Think of it as an investment in your professional development and success.
The value of professional attire goes beyond its price tag. It can lead to higher earnings, career advancement, and an enhanced professional reputation. When you calculate the potential returns in terms of salary increases, new opportunities, and client trust, the initial cost of quality attire often pales in comparison. It’s not just clothing; it’s an investment in your future, and the ROI can be significant.
Longevity and Timelessness: Another crucial aspect of the true ROI is the choice between investing in timeless pieces that never go out of fashion versus falling into the trap of fast fashion. Quality professional attire, designed with timeless style in mind, not only lasts longer but also remains relevant year after year. Investing in classic pieces ensures that you won’t need to constantly replace your wardrobe, saving you both time and money in the long run.
Fast fashion, on the other hand, might seem like a cost-effective option initially, but it often requires frequent updates as trends come and go. This continuous expenditure can add up quickly, making it less cost-effective in the grand scheme of your career. A well-considered investment in timeless attire not only provides a better return but also reflects a commitment to long-term success.
c. The Impact on Client Acquisition and Retention: When it comes to client relationships, professional attire can play a significant role in client acquisition and retention. Clients often make judgments based on first impressions, and your attire can influence their decision to hire or continue working with you. Clients typically seek legal services during critical moments in their lives, and they want to trust that their attorney takes their case seriously.
By consistently dressing professionally, you convey a sense of dedication and respect for your clients and their legal matters. This can lead to stronger client relationships, repeat business, and positive referrals. In the legal industry, where word-of-mouth and referrals are crucial for building a client base, the ROI of professional attire extends beyond the financial realm into the realm of trust and loyalty.
In essence, the true ROI of professional attire in the legal industry is multifaceted. It involves evaluating the financial cost against the potential benefits, making strategic choices that prioritize longevity and timelessness, and recognizing the impact attire can have on client acquisition and retention. When you consider all these aspects together, it becomes clear that dressing professionally isn’t just an expense; it’s an investment with the potential for substantial returns in your legal career.
Tips for Making Smart Attire Investments
When it comes to making smart attire investments in the legal profession, several key principles can guide your choices:
Quality Over Quantity: Instead of filling your closet with a multitude of inexpensive garments, prioritize quality over quantity. Investing in high-quality, durable pieces ensures that your attire will not only last longer but also maintain its professional appearance over time. Look for well-tailored suits, well-constructed blouses, and sturdy footwear that can withstand the demands of your profession. While these items may have a higher initial cost, their longevity and the impression they leave on clients and colleagues make them well worth the investment.
Versatility is Key: Opt for pieces that offer versatility and can be mixed and matched for various occasions. This approach not only provides a more significant return on your investment but also simplifies your daily wardrobe choices. A classic black suit, for example, can be dressed up for court appearances, dressed down for client meetings, and easily paired with different shirts and ties. Versatile attire not only saves you money but also ensures that you’re prepared for any professional scenario.
Staying Updated: While investing in timeless pieces is essential, it’s also crucial to occasionally update your wardrobe to stay current, yet classic. Fashion evolves over time, and staying informed about contemporary trends can help you maintain a modern and professional appearance. However, this doesn’t mean abandoning your classic pieces. Instead, consider incorporating trendy accessories or subtle updates to your wardrobe to keep your look fresh while still projecting an image of reliability and competence.
By adhering to these principles, you can make strategic and intelligent attire investments that pay off not only in the short term but throughout your legal career. In the legal world, where your image is intertwined with your professional success, thoughtful wardrobe choices can make a significant difference in how you are perceived and the opportunities that come your way.
